Lots of Ships

The villagers of Bectan Sands were treated to the wonderful site of a whole load of tall ships passing by the coastline this week. It was part of the "Tall Ships Race" between Bristol and Liverpool. Mrs. Shaw, a customer at the village grocers, said;

It was a lovely sight to see. Early in the morning in the distance towards Rivermouth, out of the mist, appeared several old ships with their sails fully open travelling North. It was like looking out on an old fashioned sea.

The race continues for the next few days.

Charity Cricket Match

There will be a charity cricket challenge to be played in Forest Town during the Spring Bank Holiday, between Bectan Sands, Rivermouth and Forest Town. Local residents are being asked to put their names down to play for their team.

As well as the cricket there will be lots of other activities to try. There will be cake stalls, face painting, strongman challenge, children's fancy dress competition, as well as a small funfair.

All proceeds from these matches will go to local retired sailors and fishermen fund. Please come along on Monday May 31st and support this cause.

Pollution

Bectan Sands locals are worried about the pollution that seems to be getting worse along the beach. Every morning there is a foamy scum along the edge of the sea that smells funny. Gradually during the morning it seems to dissolve and disappears into the sea.

The mayor has said that tests are going to be carried out on the foam to find out what it is, and where it has come from. Mr. Quimby has also said that there is no reason for people not to go onto the beach while the tests are carried out.

A local nature lover said that this was a result of global warming. He said;

This is caused by the water being warmer and allowing bacteria to grow quicker. This is due to global warming and is telling us we need to look after the sea.

Holiday Time

It has been a lovely bank holiday at Bectan Sands, and there have been lots of visitors to the area today.

Mrs. Benson, who lives and works in the shop, said

"There have been lots of people arriving in the village today to spend some time on the beach. It must have been the weather that drew them here. It's been lovely and sunny and all day"

Down on the beach Miss Young has been working non stop all day selling ice creams to the tourists, as well as renting out sunshades. She said it has been the busiest Mayday holiday for a long time.

Now that the afternoon is ending people are starting to leave, and the village is returning to normal.
